The invisible challenge:
air pressure in the cavity

SANCO Newsletter
Know what's going on

Did you know that the air pressure inside the cavity of an insulating glass unit (IGU) is essentially the air pressure from the production site ‘sealed in’? This effect is a direct consequence of the gas-tight seal created by the edge bond system, which connects two or more panes of glass in an airtight and moisture-tight assembly. The evolution of the edge bond – from soldered glass edges in the 1950s to today’s two-stage adhesive bond – has significantly improved the tightness and durability of modern insulating glass. However, this hermetic seal also prevents any natural equalisation of pressure between the cavity and the surrounding air.

Controlled pressure compensation
If there is a substantial difference in altitude between the production and installation locations, a pressure imbalance can occur, for example when IGUs are delivered to alpine regions. This may subject the glass to bending tensile stresses and place the edge bond under tension or compression. To avoid such tensions, the so-called barometric air pressure can be adjusted directly during production at the installation site. Alternatively, special compensation elements can be used – such as capillaries or valves equipped with integrated special membranes. These components allow pressure equalisation without causing an uncontrolled rise in humidity within the cavity. Excess moisture absorption can overwhelm the desiccant contained in the spacer – which may result in condensation forming on the cold exterior pane.

SANCO Glass Book
The new SANCO Glass Book 2025 provides even more planning insight into insulating glass. This updated technical publication is an invaluable tool for planning, tendering, and consultancy, bringing together all key information on glass products, applications, and technical principles – concise, practical, and up to date. The SANCO Glass Book 2025 is available for a nominal charge through SANCO partners or by email from SANCO Consulting (info@sanco.de).

The SANCO Glass Book is available in German. An English version is being planned.
