Spatial heights for Cologne's crane buildings

In the 1920s, the Soviet architect El Lissitzky dreamed of so-called Cloud Irons – high-rise buildings that extend horizontally and vertically in order to make better use of urban space potential. Almost a century later, they are echoed aesthetically in the three crane buildings designed by Bothe, Richter, Teherani Architekten and Linster Architekten, which were built in Cologne's Rheinauhafen. The striking cubist buildings, which take their name from their shape, which is reminiscent of loading cranes, create a new waterfront promenade that does not go past the buildings, but through them, creating exciting new spaces and perspectives.

As is our specialty, we fitted the three crane houses extensively with glass: Our insulating glass SANCO Plus EN was used in the façades, a high-performance thermal insulation glass. In addition, a combination of thermal insulation glass and solar control glass was installed as insulating glass SANCO Plus COMBI Neutral 70/35.

Our reliable single-pane safety glass, which was given a graphite gray print, came into play for the parapet glazing, promoting the sleek and minimalist appeal of the Kranhäuser.

A total of 2,000 square meters of our safety glass was selected for the seemingly floating glass railings, some of which were finished with our SANCO PRINT screen printing process – equally floating is our safety glass that we deployed in the glass elevator and that was partially printed with etching imitation.
